Thrive

At King James I Academy, every student matters. We strive to ensure that every student feels safe, valued, supported and included. We recognise that emotional wellbeing plays an important role in a young person's development, relationships and ability to learn.

Research shows that how we behave is closely linked to how we feel, and how we feel can influence how we learn. At King James, we recognise the importance of understanding students' emotions and supporting them to develop positive, healthy relationships with adults and peers. By nurturing social and emotional wellbeing, we aim to build confidence, self-esteem, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning.

What is Thrive?

Thrive is a therapeutic approach designed to support the emotional, social and mental development of young people. It provides practical strategies and activities that help students understand and manage their emotions, build healthy relationships and develop the skills needed to thrive both in school and beyond.

Why might my child attend a Thrive session?

Young people can experience emotional and social challenges as they grow and develop. These may include:

  • Difficulties with friendships and relationships.
  • Challenges managing behaviour during social times.
  • Finding it difficult to settle and prepare for learning.
  • Struggling to understand or manage strong emotions.
  • Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, frustrated or unsure where to turn for support.

These experiences are a normal part of growing up. Thrive sessions provide a safe, supportive environment where students can explore their feelings, develop coping strategies and build confidence in managing everyday challenges.

Thrive Online

At King James I Academy, we use Thrive Online, a screening and assessment tool that helps identify students who may benefit from additional social and emotional support.

Students may be invited to participate in small-group Thrive sessions, where carefully planned activities support their individual developmental needs.

Activities may include:

  • Storytelling and discussion.
  • Games and team challenges.
  • Music and movement.
  • Creative arts and crafts.
  • Outdoor learning and forest school.
  • Relaxation and mindfulness activities.

These sessions are designed to promote confidence, independence, resilience, emotional awareness, positive relationships and social skills, helping students feel more secure and ready to learn.

Thrive Five Alive Days

As part of our commitment to supporting the whole child, King James I Academy also holds two Thrive Five Alive Days each academic year, giving all Key Stage 3 students the opportunity to experience Thrive-inspired learning.  Thrive Five Alive is a school day with a difference! Five periods of exciting, themed activities combining creativity, collaboration, practical challenges and fun. Blending social, emotional and cognitive learning, these days encourage students to build connections, think creatively, solve problems and reflect on their experiences.  Through shared challenges and engaging activities, students develop valuable skills, make meaningful links between their learning and the wider world, and discover new ways to think, learn and grow together.  Thrive Five Alive celebrates the importance of learning beyond traditional classroom routines, recognising that personal development, positive relationships and emotional wellbeing are all essential parts of a successful education.
