This month, as part of our equality, diversity and inclusion programme, we held a special Day of Welcome event where students explored different cultures and experiences through a range of fun activities, including the popular Shine a Light cycling challenge.

Students and staff were invited to keep a light illuminated from 9am until 3pm through continuous pedalling of an adapted bike as a symbol of hope and global friendship. We also created a paper chain with strips of paper featuring hand written messages of welcome in different languages. This event was just one of the many organised activities as we work towards achieving the Schools of Sanctuary Award in 2027. This award is given to schools in recognition of their good practice in fostering a safe and inclusive school environment, building understanding and empathy towards people seeking safety and working collaboratively to strengthen community approaches to welcoming refugee children and families.

Earlier in the year, we were privileged to welcome Iman Malouhi into school to talk about her experience fleeing war in Syria. Iman told Year 7 students the powerful and inspiring story of how she was forced to flee her home, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who listened. We are grateful to Iman for sharing her journey so openly and for giving our students such as meaningful and thought provoking experience.
